MUSIC IN THE RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE ASHKENAZI JEWS (english description below)
Prezentowana płyta zawiera nagrania żydowskich śpiewów religijnych sporządzone przez prof. Bożenę Muszkalską podczas badań terenowych prowadzonych w Polsce i w innych krajach Europy wschodniej w latach 2002 – 2013. Uzupełniają je dokumenty dźwiękowe zarejestrowane w Wiedniu, gdzie żyje wiele grup żydowskich (wywodzących się częściowo z Europy wschodniej), które zachowały bogaty tradycyjny repertuar liturgiczny i paraliturgiczny1. Nagrania te są ilustracjami dźwiękowymi do książki pt. "Po całej ziemi rozchodzi się ich dźwięk..." Muzyka w życiu religijnym Żydów aszkenazyjskich (Musicologica Wratislaviensia, Wrocław: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego 2013). Jest to pierwsza praca muzykologiczna, której podstawę źródłową stanowią nagrania modlitw śpiewanych we wschodnio- i środkowoeuropejskich synagogach po Szoa.
Repertuar śpiewanych modlitw jest uzależniony od przyjętego w danej synagodze rytu, od predyspozycji prowadzących modlitwy baalei tfila i ich stosunku do tradycji oraz - w pewnym stopniu - od preferencji kongregacji. Obejmuje on modlitwy wykonywane przez baal tfila solowo z melodiami niemetrycznymi i metrycznymi, metryczne hymny śpiewane przez całą kongregację i zmirot, pieśni towarzyszące posiłkom szabatowym. Wśród nagranych śpiewów znajdują się modlitwy przeznaczone na szabat i na różne święta w żydowskim kalendarzu liturgicznym, a także fragment purimszpilu, sztuki odgrywanej w dniu święta Purim. Nagrania dają przegląd różnych stylów wykonawczych, które wykształciły się w obrębie aszkenazyjskiej tradycji muzycznej. Priorytetem podczas prowadzonych eksploracji było jednakże rejestrowanie śpiewów w wykonaniu przedstawicieli najstarszego pokolenia, którzy pamiętali przedwojenny sposób realizacji modlitw na terenach, z których pochodzili. Dziś większość z tych osób nie żyje, a prezentowane nagrania stanowią nierzadko jedyny ślad pełnionej przez nie funkcji baal tfila

This Playlist contains Jewish religious chants recorded by PhD Bożena Muszkalska during her fieldwork in Poland and Eastern Europe (2002-2013). They are supplemented by recordings of this kind of singing made in Vienna, where many Jewish groups (partly originating from Eastern Europe) have been living, who preserve rich traditional repertory, both liturgical and paraliturgical. The CD and Playlist accompanies a book of Bożena Muszkalska entitled “’ „Their voice goes out into all the earth…’ – Music in the religious life of the Ashkenazi Jews” (Musicologica Wratislaviensia, Wrocław: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego 2013), which is the first musicological monograph based on the source materials gathered in Eastern and Central Europe after the Shoa.
Repertory of sung prayers depends on several factors: a given rite in a given synagogue; the preference of baalei tefilla, who lead the prayers, and their attitude toward tradition; and the preference of the congregation. The repertory consists of prayers sung by baal tefilla solo, with metric and non-metric melodies; metric hymns sung by whole congregation; and zemirot, songs accompanying Shabbat meals. On the CD, there are prayers for Shabbat and other holidays of Jewish liturgical calendar, and a fragment of Purimspiel, a play performed during Purim holiday. The recordings exemplify various styles of Ashkenazi musical tradition. However, the author’s priority was to record the chants sang by the representatives of the oldest generation, who still remembered the way of singing in their homelands before the World War II. Today, most of these people have already passed away and these recordings are often the only testimonies of their job as baal tefilla.
